PASSING THE PICKLE
IN THIS EPISODE
This is Pickle News You Can Use...
We're breaking our usual mold of presentation to bring you an exclusive story!
Here at The Pickle Club we had heard rumors that Conan O'Brien had a pickle in his office. Our suspicions however were not confirmed until we ran across this video with Jimmy Fallon.
But here's the exclusive and breaking TPC TV news part...we recently watched a live taping of the David Letterman show and asked how the pickle-passing tradition had begun.
Letterman's people said this tradition was started by Letterman, the original host of the NBC Late Night franchise. He had found the pickle amongst his studio things and just passed it forward when he moved to the Late Show on CBS.
And that does it for another edition of The Pickle Club TV. Thanks for watching!

An Ox or a Pickle?
IN THIS EPISODE
We all know there's a Chinese Zodiac but who knew there's a Jewish one too? (TPC TV breaking news alert! ) Read our interview with the creator of The Jewish Zodiac, Seth Front. He's a comedic screenwriter who came up with this very witty idea!
In this episode, you'll find out just how accurate The Jewish Zodiac really is, and we will also visit the famous Katz's deli, one of the last TRUE delicatessen's in New York City. We'll meet co-owner Alan Dell (See video below) and find out some inside info about this iconic gem.
Interviewee: Seth Front (not in video) Profession: CEO & Creator of The Jewish Zodiac
TPC: So what is this about a Jewish zodiac?
SETH: Jews have admired the Chinese culture for a long time. And they
especially love Chinese food. In fact generations ago - especially in
New York City - Jews would go to synagogue on Saturdays and to Chinese
restaurants on Sundays. The Jewish Zodiac is a humorous play on the Chinese Zodiac, but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
TPC: How did you come up with the descriptions of the food?
SETH: I'm a comedy writer, mainly screenplays, so I just thought about
personifying the foods: what would be the personal characteristics of a
pickle? Or a blintz? Bagel was the first one I came up with: "You're
pliable and always bounce back, although you feel something's missing
in your center."
TPC: How did you determine which birth years would be represented by which food?
SETH: God spoke to me. He spoke to Moses on Mt. Sinai; he spoke to me at a Chinese restaurant.
TPC: We noticed that matzah ball soup, matzah and gefilte fish are not represented. Any particular reason?
SETH: I originally wanted to do 18 foods, since 18 is the numerical value of
the hebrew word "chai," which means "life." 18 is THE really big
number in Judaism; it's kinda like "8" to the Chinese. But twelve is
the traditional number for a zodiac, so we had to cut it down.
TPC: What are your predictions for 2009, the year of the pickle?
Seth: It's very appropriate that we're in the Year of the Pickle, for many
reasons: 1) Our new president, Barack Obama, was born in the Year of
the Pickle (1961); 2) America is "going green" in a serious way now,
and the Pickle is the "greenest" of the Jewish Zodiac symbols. Not
only is it literally green, but as a vegetable it's biodegradable and
has a very small carbon footprint; 3) Economically, we're in a downturn
so people are looking for bargains. And what better bargain is there
than a pickle? At most delis they give you a plate of pickles for free
while you're waiting for the main course.

Making a Pickle-O
IN THIS EPISODE
Musician Kaoru Watanabe attempts for the very first time to make a flute out of a pickle. Will his attempt sour or will he make sweet music? Find out.
Guest Name: Kaoru Watanabe Profession: Flutist
TPC: Where did you grow up? Kaoru: St Louis, MO
TPC: How and when did you start playing the flute?
Kaoru: My
parents are musicians and wanted me to play an instrument. My neighbor
had a flute so I started playing the flute. I was nine-years-old. I
also started playing the taiko. TPC: What is the difference between playing the shinobue and the flute?
Kaoru: The shinobue
has a life of its own because it's made out of bamboo. It connects me
to the Japanese culture. The flute has warmth but it's different
because it's metal.
TPC: What is it about the flute that you enjoy?
Kaoru: I feel comfortable expressing myself with the flute - expressing my feelings and emotions.
TPC: Did it help you get dates?
Kaoru: I didn't realize that being a musician would attract women until later in life - then I exploited it as much as possible.
Please check out Kaoru's website for more information, including upcoming performances: http://www.watanabekaoru.com/
Pickle Martini
IN THIS EPISODE
Master mixologist Dalio Calado rings in the New Year using homemade pickle juice to make drinks that you are sure to relish.
TPC: How did you become a master mixologist? Dalio:
I started to develop the interest for drinks while traveling the world
as a flight attendant. The contact with different cultures made food
and drink a unique experience. Years later, after spending many hours
as a bartender, some diplomas in the bag, but most importantly, after
many bad cocktails and several mistakes, it seems that I´ve found my
way.
TPC: What's the most popular drink that you currently make and what are the ingredients?
Dalio: One of my latest creations, LYCHEES N´ FLOWERS, was
made in honor of the Beijing olympics. It's a simple combination of
fresh lychees, gin and elder flower liqueur. Simple and delicious!
Find out more about Dalio Calado or visit Zigolinis and be sure to ask for the Pickle Martini.
